The Parochial Church Council (PCC) is seeking a volunteer to take over when the current editor stands down at the end of this year.

Editor of The Test Magazine

Job Description

The Test is a 32-page monthly magazine produced and funded by St Mary’s Church. Each issue comprises a lead article, a number of regular articles and one-off features, and paid adverts.

The magazine aims to:

  • provide interesting, sometimes inspiring, articles on a variety of topics 
  • celebrate local events and activities and the people involved
  • be a vehicle for bringing the gospel into people’s homes
  • provide useful church and village information

The editor is responsible to the incumbent and the PCC.

Principle Tasks

Ensure all items from contributors are submitted on time.

Collate, proof-read and edit all copy.

Ensure all images (photographs, adverts, posters, logos) are sufficiently high resolution. [Currently, the editor is assisted in this task by another volunteer who evaluates images, advises, and makes any necessary improvements].

Determine the contents for each page.

Write clear instructions to the graphic designer.

Submit copy to the graphic designer/printer on time.

Plan and secure material for future issues, in particular, the lead article and front cover photograph.

Proof-read the draft magazine and agree changes with the graphic designer.

Administer the magazine’s advertising: Liaise with advertisers; coordinate with the church treasurer in managing the renewal process. [This task could be delegated]

Report to PCC meetings and the Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM).

Qualities and Skills

Commitment to the magazine’s aims.

Ability to work accurately and to a deadline.

Good written and oral communication skills.

An eye for detail; editing and proof-reading skills.

A good aesthetic and creative sense (graphic design skills would be helpful).

An understanding of the magazine’s audience and a broad interest in the village and its activities in order to produce appealing and topical content.

IT literate: Familiarity with basic word processing, emails and Dropbox (a laptop will be provided exclusively for use on The Test).

Timetable and Inputs

Currently, 9 days is allowed at the start of the month between the deadline for receipt of articles and submission to the graphic designer who determines the layout of each page. Typically up to about 25 hours input may be required in that period. A maximum of a further 2 days is available for proofing the draft magazine which usually requires 1 or 2 sessions of a few hours.

3 or 4 reports to the PCC are required per annum including an annual summary for the APCM.

Advertisement agreements are reviewed and invoiced annually.
