Overton Benefice

The Benefice of Overton is made up of six churches, with congregations dedicated to serving the spiritual, educational and cultural needs of the surrounding community. Our doors are always open to community members looking for a place to worship.

Service times given in the church entries on this page may vary, so please see the Benefice Planner below for up-to-date details of services at each church.

St Mary’s

We are a lively Anglican church for the whole village of Overton.
The church is made up of people at all stages on the faith journey and all ages and backgrounds.

There are good facilities for children and young people to enjoy their own activities. We make good use of our modern Church Rooms with midweek groups running for children and the local community.

St Mary the Virgin

We are the church for Laverstoke and Freefolk, a village sitting halfway between Overton and Whitchurch. We also welcome quite a number from Overton to our regular services which are at 9:00 am on the 1st, 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month.  We also have special services at other times to celebrate Christmas, Harvest and Easter.

In the months of May – September, we hold a 9:00 am Holy Communion (BCP) at St Nicholas, Freefolk, just opposite St Mary the Virgin, on the other side of the B3400. Under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust, this lovely little church is packed with history and a church on this site was mentioned in the Doomsday Book.

St Michael’s

St Michael at North Waltham, Hampshire is a friendly Christian community where we welcome others to join us in our worship and service to God. Our emphasis is on learning and understanding the Bible and following the example of Jesus and his followers.
The vision of St Michael is to make an impact for God, here in North Waltham, Hampshire by helping people understand the enriching messages of eternal hope given to us by Jesus Christ through His words and deeds. Come just as you are – we’d love to get to know you better.

St Nicholas’

The Parish Church of Steventon is St Nicholas, situated some distance away from the village at the top of a small country lane opposite the site of the old manor House. St Nicholas was originally built around the year 1200 and, apart from some limited 13th, 15th and 19th century alterations, has stayed much the same since it was first built. The church is used regularly for worship and is well known for its associations with Jane Austen, born in Steventon in 1775, being the single most important building left standing in Steventon which relates to her.

All Saints’

All Saints’ Church is situated in the hamlet of Deane just off the B3400 road from Basingstoke and is within the Overton United Benefice.

Lay led Matins are usually held on the first Sunday of the month, with Holy Communion (1662) normally celebrated on the third Sunday. On the 5th Sunday we join the United Benefice service held at one of the other churches in the Benefice.

Holy Trinity & St Andrew’s Ashe

The C19th church of Holy Trinity Ashe has a myriad of connections to Hampshire history, the great Jane Austen visited her friend here and here lies Robert Portal remembered as one of those at the Charge of the Light Brigade.

We celebrate Holy Communion on the second Sunday of the month at 11:00 am.
